Deciding on your career path after completing your education can be a daunting task. However, one invaluable resource that can help you make an informed decision is undertaking an internship. In this blog, I will share my personal experience as an intern at Digital Glue, and why interning at a marketing agency can prove to be a transformative opportunity.
The Search for Clarity
During the second year of my Theology and Religion BA degree, uncertainty about my future career began to overwhelm me. Many people around me questioned what I planned to do with my degree since I wasn’t interested in teaching or entering the ministry. Frankly, I didn’t have a clear vision for my post-university life either. Feeling a bit lost, I decided to explore internships targeted at Arts students. My goal was to explore various possibilities, test the waters, and bolster my CV with some practical experience. While I applied for positions in PR and marketing at large, multi-franchise companies, I faced rejection after lengthy assessments without even getting a chance to speak with a real person. This experience taught me the significance of finding a workplace where I could connect with the team on a personal level. Consequently, I shifted my focus to marketing agencies operating on a more local and close-knit scale.
My journey led me to apply to Digital Glue, and I took the extra effort to research the company thoroughly before submitting my application. Understanding the work environment and ensuring alignment with their values proved crucial. After a short wait, I received the good news of being accepted as an intern, and I was excited to engage in a friendly conversation with some members of the team. Right from the start, I noticed a stark difference between the impersonal approach of larger corporations and the warm and welcoming atmosphere at Digital Glue.
The Digital Glue Experience
Throughout my four weeks at Digital Glue, I had the opportunity to interact and work with the entire team, gaining invaluable insights from each member. Moreover, weekly hangouts outside the office allowed me to build strong relationships and quickly settle into the working life.
One of the most significant advantages of interning at a marketing agency, as opposed to working for a single company, was being involved in multiple campaigns. My experience extended across various projects, including work for Datacolor, Cytox, Midven, and Digital Glue itself. I got hands-on experience in PR, social media management, and copywriting. This exposure allowed me to apply the research skills I honed at university to real-world projects, affirming the usefulness of my Theology degree in unexpected ways. Having the flexibility to contribute to diverse campaigns for different businesses exposed me to various approaches tailored to different markets. This exposure was particularly helpful for someone like me, unsure of the direction I wanted to pursue. It allowed me to discover my preferences and areas of interest.
During my internship, I was tasked with writing several blogs on successful business strategies, PR, and social media plans. Initially, I felt quite intimidated, given that I had no prior background in business or marketing. However, with gentle encouragement from my colleagues, I discovered that my research skills extended beyond theology and equipped me to delve into new topics effectively. Crafting content as though I were an expert in these subjects boosted my confidence and enhanced my understanding of business concepts. I also had the chance to refine my technical and creative skills on Canva and WordPress.
Key Takeaways
Overall, interning at a marketing agency like Digital Glue has been an eye-opening experience for me. It provided the chance to explore diverse projects, apply my academic skills in a practical setting, and gain confidence in unfamiliar areas. If you are uncertain about your career path or seeking exposure to multiple fields, interning for a marketing agency could be the game-changer you need to shape your future endeavors.
